Ainee’s gif is perfect
I’m sorry that you’re so oppressed
Does your father beat you?
Are you going to be forced to have an arranged marriage?
Shadeism
This documentary short is an introduction to the issue of shadeism, the discrimination that exists between the lighter-skinned and darker-skinned members of the same community. This documentary short looks specifically at how it affects young womyn within the African, Caribbean, and South Asian diasporas. Through the eyes and words of 5 young womyn and 1 little girl - all females of colour - the film takes us into the thoughts and experiences of each. Overall, ‘Shadeism’ explores where shadeism comes from, how it directly affects us as womyn of colour, and ultimately, begins to explore how we can move forward through dialogue and discussion.

Womanifesto
written&performed by Jill Scott(Dare to say my new favorite poem?)
Clearly I am not a fat ass
I am active brain
And lip smacking peach deep
Sometimes too aggressive in its honesty
And heart sweet
That loves wholly and completely
Whom it may choose
Whom ever it may choose
I am not gonna lie and pacify
I am arms to hold
I am lips to speak
I am a motherfucking “G”
Strong legs that stroll off the 33 bus
Or out of a money green Phantom comfortably
Knees that bend to pray
Clean from Ajax washings
Hair that is thick and soft
Thighs that betwixt
An amazing all expense grand prize
I am eyes that sing
Smile that brightens
Touch that rings
And supplies euphoric release
I am a Grand Dame Queen Beast
I am warm
I am peace
From the roads of Botswana from 23rd Street
From the inside third eye
Ever watching this wicked wicked system of things
I do see
I am friend to pen
And a lover of strong women
A diamond to men
I am curious and interested like children
I welcome the wise to teach
Appreciator of my culture
Thick not just from bone dense and eat
I have a rhythm in my ways
And a practice in my seek
And yes, I do crave the rhythm of my space
With a man that rejoices in God’s Grace
With faith I do hear to listen
Two hands that fist
When forced pushes to shove
And your ego won’t submit
I am gifted
I am all of this
And indeed the shit
Clearly I am not just an ass
Image - ballet danger Cira Robinson jumping in the air with a badass look on her face. Her pointe shoes are glossy brown and match her skin tone.
Cira Robinson started “pancaking” her ballet shoes when she was 18: “I use foundation. The colour is Caribbean coffee – it’s basic cheap make-up, but it works. Pointe shoes come only in the traditional pink, unless they’re red for a show. It would look strange if there was a pink shoe at the end of a brown leg, so it helps with the line. My pointe shoes are brown because my skin is brown.”
When I first saw this photo I didn’t even see Cira’s pointe shoes. If she were wearing the light pink shoes I wouldn’t have seen the magnificent extension through her legs right past her toes, and that’s kind of bullshit because Cira and all other dancers of colour are having their craft compromised by dancewear that only suits white people.
Look at that elegance. Beautiful.
This photo is beautiful .
new wave feminism: why we need to make an effort to seek, listen to & respect WOC figures
even the texts used to represent civil rights activists and the women’s movement shows a problematic trend in how we discuss issues and culture. We can read about the black experience through the eyes of Malcolm X, Eldridge Cleaver and Martin Luther King Jr, and we can learn about history’s…
Calling Someone a Feminist is Not Necessarily a Compliment
It is not now, or ever will be a compliment to call someone a name that they either find offensive, or are uncomfortable with. It will never be acceptable to tell women to cast aside their lived experience for the greater good. None of these suggestions support women, and in fact represent patriarchal thinking, because that is the genesis of the idea that women need to be told what to believe, and what to do for their own good. Even though the name of this blog is Womanist Musings, I still have people refer to this as a feminist space, denying my very obvious stated identity.
…
Feminism does not hold a monopoly on women’s activism, and it’s time that they start to understand this. If they truly want women to identify as feminist, rather than attempting to force this label on us, perhaps they should address the various issues which have caused so many to take issue with feminist organizing. It’s far easier to point a finger outward, than it is to look inward and examine the various issues within feminism. It is not those of us who continue to work for change and refuse to identify as feminist that are failing women, it’s feminists who have failed to work on the exclusionary aspects of the feminist movement that are failing us.

INDIAN VERSION OF “ROSIE THE RIVETER”
I have seen various photographic recreations of Rosie the Riveter - all modeled by white women. Yet I’d never seen an Indian version. And I thought to myself, “I’m gonna make one!” One of my family members, who lives in India, helped me with the translation of “We Can Do It!” in Hindi. The model is me, the photographer is me, and I wore a traditional polyester saree with a cotton choli (blouse). I modeled my look after my aunts and other working class Indian women in the home state where both my parents come from - I greatly admire them and their work ethics. I hope you guys enjoy my Indian version of Rosie the Riveter!

Awesome! After I posted that embroidered image of Rosie the Riveter earlier, I was thinking about how all redesigned images using Rosie are always always white. This is so great!
