“So much has been said about the girls over the years. But we have never found an answer. It didn’t matter in the end how old they had been, or that they were girls… but only that we had loved them… and that they hadn’t heard us calling… still do not hear us calling them from out of those rooms… where they went to be alone for all time… and where we will never find the pieces to put them back together.” The Virgin Suicides

“In the end we had pieces of the puzzle, but no matter how we put them together, gaps remained. Oddly shaped emptiness mapped by what surrounded them, like countries we couldn’t name.”
Why oh why have I not seen this movie before now? Not sure. But I know I’m obsessed with it now! The love stories in this movie hurt my heart and the mystery racks my brain. Something about that tree…

(TW: Thoughts on suicide)
This is the snapshot that Mr. Lisbon takes of the girls before they go to the prom. Note that Lux’s hand looks like she is holding a cigarette, which is how she is found when she dies. Therese’s eyes are closed, and she ends up overdosing on sleeping pills. Mary coughs right after the photo is taken, and she dies by putting her head in the oven (and, in the book, is the only one who acidentally survived). Bonnie’s arm looks like a noose around her neck, like how she commits suicide.
I….I never noticed this before! Was this done intentionally? I mean….honestly I felt badly that the girls committed suicide, and yet I find this beautiful and haunting…
